Druk Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bhutan was established on 5 April 1981 by a Royal Proclamation and it began its first operations on 14 January 1983 with two Indian-manufactured Dornier 228s.
The Paro airport is located in a deep valley at an elevation of 7300 ft above sea level with surrounding hills as high as 16,000 ft and approach into Paro airport is entirely by visual flight rules.  Due to the difficult conditions, operations with the older Dornier 228s caused many delays and diversions. With the growth of traffic and the expansion of flights the need for a larger aircraft became necessary. In November 1988, British Aerospace BAe 146-100 was selected and started operations.  Since 2004, two A319-100s with 115 seating capacity has been included in the fleet.

Drukair operates daily fights between Bangkok, Kolkotta and Paro, four flights between Delhi, Kathmandu and Paro, two flights between Dhaka and one flight between Gaya.
